About this Item

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disease in the world. But it hasn’t received the funding and research needed to find a cure. Why? Because those who have it tend to be people whose voices have been historically silenced. Learn more about sickle cell disease and then, share what you know. When we are informed, we can work together toward a healthy and more inclusive future for everyone!

Core themes in this book:

Empathy, Hope, Illness, Prejudice

Meet A Kids Co., a new kind of media company with a collection of beautifully designed books that kickstart challenging, empowering, and important conversations for kids and their grownups.

About the Author

Dr. Julia LaMotte (she/her) is a pediatric psychologist who works with kids and families as they navigate chronic or life-limiting health conditions. She is an advocate for care for both the mind and body. Dr. LaMotte (she/her) spent her childhood exploring libraries and bookstores throughout New England where her parents instilled a lifelong love of reading. She is a pediatric psychologist who supports kids with medical conditions. She is also an active educator to future physicians and psychologists and believes change is possible only through knowledge.
Dr. Seethal Jacob (she/her) is a pediatric hematologist whose passion is caring for kids with sickle cell disease and advocating for better access to healthcare. She lives with her husband and 2 dogs. Dr. Jacob is a physician who leads a pediatric sickle cell program, and her life’s work focuses on improving the care people with sickle cell disease are provided. She loves doing this by seeing kids in her clinic, and by understanding the ways in which families access medical care as a health services researcher.
