ILikeBeingMeBooks.com is more than a bookstore. It’s a movement. Founded by longtime educators Sam & Rita Burke, whose shared passion for literacy and cultural representation spans more than three decades, this proudly Canadian, Toronto-based platform celebrates Black voices and Africentric stories that uplift, empower and inspire.
In 1994, Sam & Rita opened their first Afrocentric bookstore in Toronto. It quickly blossomed into a community hub: a vibrant space for authors, artists, educators and changemakers to connect. Today, ILikeBeingMeBooks.com continues that legacy in the digital age, curating literature that reflects the richness and diversity of the Black experience.
From affirming children’s books to powerful memoirs, health and wellness titles, and justice-oriented literature, our collection is designed to educate, affirm and engage readers of all ages. We also spotlight independent authors and artists, and offer cultural gifts, audiobooks, and original art, prints and posters.
Now, as authors themselves, Sam & Rita are bringing their own stories to classrooms, libraries, conferences and communities across Canada and beyond. At I Like Being Me Books, every story matters. We are committed to inspiring generations through inclusive literature, and to connecting people to books, and books to people.
